The Backup Gap
Most businesses assume they’re backed up in some meaningful sense — a hosting control panel snapshot, an old export, a plugin that runs occasionally. Survey data on actual backup habits paints a less reassuring picture.

What Happens When Backups Fail
The business-failure statistics tied to data loss are some of the most consistently alarming figures in this space, cited across multiple independent studies.
The Cost of Data Loss
Costs scale with organization size, but even the components that make up a data-loss incident — not just the headline total — are informative for smaller sites trying to estimate their own exposure.

We checked the math on this one: the four component figures as published ($7.2M + $2.8M + $1.6M + $0.8M = $12.4M) add up to more than the $8.6M headline average, which tells us they’re drawn from overlapping sub-studies rather than one clean breakdown — not that any single number is wrong. We’re showing all five as reported rather than forcing a false sum. Separately, U.S. organizations face an average total breach cost of $10.22 million (Secureframe, 2025), and downtime recovery has been estimated at roughly $9,000 per minute (Arcserve).
Ransomware and Backups
Ransomware remains the scenario most directly tied to backup readiness — a working, isolated backup is often the difference between a contained incident and a business-ending one.
Acronis’s H2 2025 Cyberthreats Report found at least 150 managed service providers and telecommunications companies hit by ransomware in the period studied, with phishing (52%) and unpatched vulnerabilities (27%) as the two leading attack vectors — both squarely within a typical website owner’s control. Perhaps more concerning for the years ahead: roughly 80% of ransomware-as-a-service vendors now advertise AI or automation features to their criminal customers, a shift that’s expected to keep compressing the time between a vulnerability being found and it being exploited.
Around 94% of the malware small businesses receive arrives through email — making phishing-resistant email practices and offline or immutable backups two of the highest-leverage defenses available, well ahead of most technical hardening measures in terms of cost versus benefit.
What This Means for Your Website
The single biggest risk this data points to isn’t the absence of a backup — it’s an untested one. With only about a third of organizations achieving a full recovery when they actually try to restore, “we have backups” and “we can recover from a real incident” are functionally different claims. Testing a restore periodically, keeping at least one backup copy offline or immutable (so ransomware can’t encrypt it alongside everything else), and confirming your host’s backup retention window actually matches how quickly you’d notice a problem are the three highest-leverage steps this data supports.
