CMS Market Share by Vertical: Ecommerce vs. Blogs vs. SaaS

W3Techs tracks overall CMS market share; nobody publicly tracks it cleanly by site type. We compiled W3Techs’ all-sites data against Store Leads’ ecommerce-specific tracking and platform-level industry data to build the breakdown that’s missing.

Key CMS Market Share Statistics

The picture changes substantially depending on whether you’re looking at the whole web or one vertical at a time — the platform that wins “all websites” isn’t always the platform that wins a specific category.

📌
Why nobody segments this cleanly

W3Techs’ survey — the most-cited CMS market share source on the web — measures every website it crawls as one undifferentiated pool. It doesn’t ask whether a site is a blog, a SaaS marketing page, or an online store. Ecommerce-specific tracking exists separately (Store Leads, BuiltWith Ecommerce), but it only covers stores, not the rest of the web, and none of the major trackers publish a clean “blogs vs. SaaS vs. ecommerce” breakdown from a single dataset. What follows is the closest reconstruction we could build by cross-referencing the all-sites data against the ecommerce-specific data and the available industry breakdowns for individual platforms — not a single authoritative source, because one doesn’t exist yet.

CMS Share Across All Websites

This is the number most commonly cited, and it’s dominated by content-first sites — blogs, brochure sites, news, and informational pages — simply because that category makes up the bulk of the web.

CMS Share Among Ecommerce Stores Specifically

The moment you isolate online stores, the ranking flips. WooCommerce — a WordPress plugin, not a standalone CMS — edges out Shopify for the top spot, and Shopify’s concentration in ecommerce (22.2%) is roughly three times its share of the web overall (7.7% CMS share).

The SaaS/Tech Proxy: Webflow’s Customer Base

No tracker publishes a “SaaS company website CMS share” number, so we looked for the closest available proxy: which platform’s customer base skews most toward software and technology companies. Webflow is the clearest case — it holds a small 1.2% CMS market share overall, but among its own ecommerce customers, software development (9.6%), technology/internet (5.8%), and IT services (5.0%) rank as the top three industries, well above what you’d expect if adoption were spread evenly across sectors.

⚠️
A proxy, not a direct measurement

This industry breakdown comes from Webflow’s ecommerce customer base specifically, not its full customer base of marketing sites and SaaS landing pages — which is where most B2B software companies actually use Webflow. Treat it as directional evidence that Webflow (and by extension, similar design-first builders like Framer) over-indexes with technical and software companies relative to its overall market share, not as a precise SaaS-market-share figure.

Sources & Methodology

All-website CMS figures come from W3Techs’ ongoing web technology survey. Ecommerce-specific figures come from Store Leads’ tracked database of live online stores. Industry-concentration data for Webflow comes from TechnologyChecker.io’s analysis of Webflow Ecommerce customers. Because no single source segments CMS share cleanly by vertical, this page cross-references multiple datasets rather than relying on one; it will be updated as better segmented data becomes available. Separately, W3Techs and Store Leads update their underlying figures continuously, so the exact percentages above will drift by fractions of a point over time even without a methodology change — each figure is dated to the specific snapshot it was pulled from, and this page is re-checked against current source data periodically rather than being a one-time pull.
